One of my earliest favorite discoveries made while writing Daddy Types was Sanjay Patel's awesome Little India, his beautiful retromodern illustrated primer of Hindu deities. Patel, whose dayjob is at Pixar, first published Little India on his own, then republished an expanded version with Penguin. Which I have to assume led directly to his newest project, an illustrated version of the Ramayana, which just came out from Chronicle Books.
Grain Edit has a great interview with Patel about his own story, his process, and the book itself. It's great stuff. And since the d'Aulaires never made it to India, Patel's Ramayana: Divine Loophole is bound to become the thinking dad's version of choice for bedtime.
