I done seen about everything when I seen Walt Disney outfreak Sun Ra.
For the late intergalactic Jazz overlord's birthday, Dangerous Minds points to Sun Ra and the Arkestra's rendition of "Pink Elephants on Parade," which is synched up here with the original, terrifying Dumbo animation.
The cut is from a 1988 album of WTF early Disney covers from the likes of Bonnie Rait, Ringo Starr, Sinead O'Connor--and Tom Waits, whose growl-moaning version of "Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho" takes its cue from the Seven Murderous Dwarves' pickaxes and towering shadows. It is awesome.
Oh wow, and Sun Ra did an entire Disney cover album, Second Star to the Right: Salute to Walt Disney. Here is a 1989 Arkestra performance of Zip A Dee Doo Dah from Austria.
