Except for the theatrical release of The Last Emperor and the Iran-Contra hearings, I didn't think I missed anything culture-wise while I was a missionary in Japan in 1988. I didn't realize how wrong I was.

Yeah, but you had access to Japanese TV. From the short time I spent there, it seemed like every day I would stumble upon programming that served up exuberant overstimulation on par with Pee Wee's Playhouse.
