Apparently during the oil boom of the 1970's, Venezuelan parents discovered the fun of defying the traditional, class-defining, naming system, and began giving their kids exotic or foreign-sounding names. A generation later in the Chavez era, it's a naming free-for-all. Still, the best name in this NYT article--Bujia, which means "Spark Plug"--comes from Honduras. Sorry, Taj, it was really, really close.
Well, now I don't feel so silly for naming my kid after Cal Ripken.
