Ultrasound Makes Indian Female Infanticide So Much Easier

Not a story for the faint of heart, this Reuters report on a Punjabi female fetus abortion clinic running under the guise of a maternity hospital is written in the rather sensationalistic style of the Indian newspapers.

The takeaway, though, is that the availability of ultrasound gender determination--illegal but widespread in India--has increased the number of female abortions dramatically over the last 15 years:

According to the 2001 census, the latest official population data, the national sex ratio was 933 girls to 1,000 boys whereas in Punjab it was 798 girls to 1,000 boys in 2001, compared to 875 in 1991.

my Godfather is a total freakshow about U/S exams because of their non-diagnostic, gender-determination uses in some countries. When one of us in the family is pregnant, the only information he wants to hear about the U/S is whether the baby looks healthy...
