Hatsuyama Shigeru And Kodomo No Kuni

Hatsuyama Shigeru was an illustrator for the Japanese kid's magazine Kodomo no Kuni [Children's Land] in the 1920s and 30s, the Taisho-Showa era transition when modernist ideas and design were flourishing.

These two images are from 50 Watts' amazing selection, which come from the 9000+ images from 300+ issues of Kodomo no Kuni that have been digitized art part of the International Library of Children's Literature. Just extraordinary.

I didn't realize it at first, but both these images are from July issues: 1932 up top, and 1933 above. I also didn't realize that Kodomo no Kuni was distributed in the US, or at least Hawaii.
