I hated HR PufnStuf as a kid. That show creeped me out. ? f you have no idea what I'm talking about, imagine a dark, slightly sadistic, acid-laced mashup of Barney, Yo Gabba Gabba, and live action versions of the McDonalds characters. For kids. It was the flagship production of Sid & Marty Krofft, brothers behind a whole raft of Saturday morning TV shows I hated, including Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, and holy crap, Land of the Lost?
So I'm kind of fascinated and none too sad to learn that in 1976 the Kroffts had an entire amusement park, The World of Sid & Marty Krofft, built into the atrium of the Omni hotel in downtown Atlanta, and that it cost a fortune, and that the whole control-freaky thing sucked and closed within a year. Good riddance.
For the details on this freakshow fiasco, check out the Entertainment Designer blog's far too sympathetic post.
