DT Friday Freakout: Sonic Hedgehog Edition

The DT Friday Freakout was delayed a couple of days to rope in one more shocking article about how smoothies are killing us all. Let your weekend-ruining begin:

  • Eat food, not a lot, mostly parents'. A Scottish study finds toddlers who eat adult food are healthier. [foodtank via @michaelpollan}

  • Australian researchers have reversed Down syndrome in newborn mice with a single injection of a sonic hedgehog pathway agonist. [abc.net.au via @gabrielroth]

  • The Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway is a key mechanism for guiding differentiation during embryonic development. Sonic is the most widely studied of the three Hh pathways in humans. Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and Eric Wieschaus shared the 1995 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Edward B. Lewis for their Hedgehog-related discoveries. in the 1970s. So now you know. [wikipedia]

  • Americans are having babies again. The US fertility rate is flat after a sharp decline the last few economically apocalpytic years. [nyt via mr]

  • Except for teens, who are having fewer babies than before. Though for any given teen, I'm sure one is already too many. [same deal]

  • Smoothies and fruit juices are basically diabetes in a bottle. It's fructose, the delicious, silent killer, which is now hiding in all the Chinese apple juice concentrate. [guardian]
