The Crayon Car: Seriously, What Were They Thinking?

crayon_car.jpg

The kid and I spotted the Crayon Car by Alex Toys in the MoMA shop the other day. We were killing 20 minutes until the museum itself opened. It looked cute, she was stoked about it, and at four dollars, it was painless to buy. It's not like she needed another Ugly Doll.

But let's face it: it's a car, made out of crayon. How do kids play with cars? They drive them around on the floor. So the instinctive action of this toy is to scoot it around on the floor. Or the table. I'll remind you that it's made of freakin' crayons. It's the dumbest thing in the world to buy.

The crayon pieces are obviously awkward shapes not designed for drawing, and the wax is a bit harder and more brittle than standard Crayolas, so it doesn't draw quite so easily. But any kid who leans into her cardriving even a little, is going to leave rainbow colored skidmarks behind her.
